Sargasso Sea

Sargasso Sea

Sargasso Sea by Lu Peters, 2004

The aquatic theme of this ensemble was inspired by my discovery of a photograph of the Sargasso Sea, a two-million mile becalmed area of the Atlantic Ocean which is home to the world’s largest and most colorful array of algae and seaweed.

The highly textured jacket is accented with a variety of batiks, tie silk, kimono silks, hand-dyed and commercial cottons. Collaged elements are machine quilted with variegated threads. Accents include black and white piping; machine pleated hand-dyed silk ribbons; batik and over-dyed Japanese cotton bias bindings; and glass ring embellishments.
